The vasculature with all its small capillaries and larger vessels is one of the first organs established in the growing embryo. Its proper formation and function is an absolute prerequisite for all further development. Werner Risau at his time was one of the few leading scientists in Europe and particularly in Germany in this small research area, who discovered basic molecular principles that regulate the proper formation of these blood vessels. The same molecular mechanisms that are active during development also govern the formation and restructuring of blood vessels in certain pathological conditions, e.g. during the growth of solid tumors or during the abnormal blood vessel formation in the eye of diabetic patients.

If you would like to
support talented young scientists who are continuing in Werner Risau´s tradition and who are carrying out extraordinary research projects in the field of endothelial cell biology, you are welcome to make a donation to the Werner-Risau Prize Committee (tax deductible - at least in Germany!). All donated money will go to the Werner Risau Prize only!

All donations should be transferred by wire transfer to the

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Zellbiologie (DGZ)
Code: "Werner Risau Preis"

Please note: Platin Sponsors with a donation of 5000 € or more will be invited to attend the awarding ceremony and the speakers dinner, where they will be able to meet the prize winners and all the other outstanding participating scientists!
